THE OTHER RAINBOW MOUNTAIN: PALCCOYO
I almost didn't make it to Palccoyo rainbow mountain in Peru. As it turned out, it's one of my favourite adventures in Peru.
You've probably heard of the famous Rainbow Mountain, Vinicunca. Splattered across social media, no one even knew about the rainbow mountains of Peru until 2015. The melting of snow-topped mountains due to climate change revealed nothing short of a spectacular wander, now attracting over 3000 visitors a day during peak season.
I hiked Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain during the shoulder season where the numbers were notably lower and going without a tour group, we pretty much had the place to ourselves.
Unfortunately, Vinicunca was feeling under the weather the day I decided to go.
It's not always advisable to hike a mountain at 5200m solo, especially with air so thin, those not acclimatized are sure to feel the effects.
Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain serves as a great alternative to overcrowded Vinicunca. And I'm really glad that I stayed an extra day in Cusco to experience part of the spectacular mountain range of rainbows not yet hit by over-tourism.
Whoop whoop!
Here five reasons to visit Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain:
It's a much easer hike. Sooo MUCH EASIER!
Apart from a short walk, which is relatively flat, you don't have to hike at all. At 4900m, you may still feel the effects of altitude, however with stunning views as soon as you get there, you'll be stopping a number of times to take a quick snap or two.
There's an optional hike up a small mountain which takes around 30 minutes if you're feeling up to it. At the top, you'll get a panoramic view of the mountain range.
2. It's A LOT less crowded.
In fact, there were maybe 15 people when I visited, which means you get to have the serene experience of having the place to yourself!
Seriously... Just check out these views!
Rainbow Valley!!
3. It's more a rainbow valley than a rainbow mountain
No matter where you look you'll be surrounded by stunning natural beauty. The landscape also has red mountains which you'll pass by on your walk up to the viewpoints.
If you're lucky, you'll pick up a four legged furry friend along the way...
Red Mountain
4. You can go solo
You can go solo to both rainbow mountains however as Palccoyo doesn't involve much hiking, it's easier to do solo if you're concerned about acclimitisation.
If you're thinking about travelling without a tour, read this post here to find out how to get there.
For tours, Cusco Trekking Adventures offers reasonably priced day excursions at around Β£25 for the full day.
I love how the landscape blends into itself
5. You can walk over and dance on Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain
Run, dance, jump, backflip, you can pretty much do whatever you want without 500 people in the background. It's pretty amazing!
I haven't done this in years...
Handy tips:
Wrap up, it might snow!! Towards the end of my day there, we saw the amazing contrast of blue skies and snow-capped mountains. Ausengate Mountain behind is stunning!
It's a long day. Start early, at around 7 am as the drive to Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain is around 4 hours.
If you're feeling up for it, hike 30 minutes up the mountain for spectacular views.
